Fingerprint Services Frequently Asked Questions

General Information & Services

AES of Nevada Fingerprinting & Training Center provides comprehensive fingerprinting solutions from our locations in Las Vegas, Henderson, and Laughlin. We offer Live Scan fingerprinting (digital capture and electronic submission), traditional Ink Fingerprinting on physical cards (like the standard FD-258 card), and Mobile Fingerprinting Services for both Live Scan fingerprinting and Ink Fingerprinting for individuals and groups at your location. Additionally, we facilitate specific Live Scan submissions through www.Applicantservices.com for FBI Departmental Orders (https://applicantservices.com/fbi-channeler/Departmental-Order-556-73/) and Fingerprints for the State of Florida (https://applicantservices.com/Florida/). Our services cater to various needs such as employment screening, professional licensing, state and federal background checks, and more.

Fingerprinting is often required in Las Vegas and throughout Nevada for various reasons mandated by state or federal regulations, primarily to conduct background checks. Common purposes include employment screening (especially in fields like education, healthcare, childcare, security), professional licensing (e.g., Nevada Gaming Control Board, Nursing Board, Real Estate Division, Contractors Board, PILB), federal checks (FBI), out of state CCW, immigration, adoption, and personal record reviews. AES of Nevada Fingerprinting & Training Center is equipped to handle fingerprinting for many of these requirements.

Live Scan fingerprinting is a modern, inkless method of capturing your fingerprints digitally using a scanner. AES of Nevada Fingerprinting & Training Center utilizes Live Scan technology for fast, clean, and accurate fingerprint capture. These digital prints can often be transmitted electronically directly to requesting agencies like the Nevada Department of Public Safety (DPS) and the FBI for checking against state and federal criminal history databases, reducing processing time compared to traditional ink cards. “Electronic Fingerprints” typically refers to Live Scan prints.

Ink fingerprinting, also known as Hard Card fingerprinting, is the traditional method where fingerprints are rolled in ink and transferred onto a physical card, most commonly the standard FBI FD-258 card. AES of Nevada Fingerprinting & Training Center offers this service, which is often required for certain federal agencies, out-of-state requirements, or specific licensing processes that do not accept Live Scan. The rolling fee for ink cards is $25.00 for the 1st card, and $10.00 for each additional card (background check fees are separate). Remember that agency processing times for ink cards can take an estimated 8+ weeks. (See Question 6 for the Ink Card process).

The main difference is the method and submission. Live Scan captures prints digitally and transmits them electronically for faster processing against state/federal databases. Ink Fingerprinting uses ink on a physical card (Hard Card) which typically needs to be mailed by you to the requesting agency, resulting in longer processing times. Your requesting agency’s instructions will usually specify which method (Live Scan or Hard Card) you need.

When coming for ink fingerprinting, please bring any written instructions provided by the agency requesting your prints. If you were given a blank fingerprint card, bring that as well (though AES of Nevada Fingerprinting & Training Center will provide the standard FD-258 cards). Do not fill out the card beforehand. Our certified technician will verify your valid, non-expired ID, ensure all required information fields are completed legibly in black ink based on your agency’s instructions, capture the fingerprints, and typically seal the completed, legible card(s) in an envelope with a Chain of Custody label. We strongly recommend mailing this sealed envelope promptly in a protective cardboard mailer using a trackable service (UPS/USPS/FedEx) as advised by AES of Nevada Fingerprinting & Training Center.

No, AES of Nevada Fingerprinting & Training Center does not offer the service of capturing fingerprints via Live Scan and then printing them onto a card. While this technology exists, our experience indicates that cards printed this way can suffer from reduced resolution or printer calibration issues, potentially leading to higher rejection rates. To ensure the highest possible quality and acceptance rate for physical fingerprint cards (like the FD-258), we exclusively use the traditional ink-and-roll method (‘wet prints’).

Process & Requirements

  • You will need to provide valid, original identification documents – photocopies are not accepted. Please ensure your government-issued photo ID is current and not expired, as expired IDs cannot be accepted. The ID requirements are as follows:
    • Primary Option: If you have one of the following valid documents, it will suffice for identification:
      • U.S. Driver’s License
      • DMV-issued ID Card
      • U.S. Passport
    • Secondary Option: If you do not have one of the primary IDs listed above, you must present two (2) forms of identification from the list below. At least one (1) of these two documents must contain your photograph:
      • Driver license from another country, Identification card issued by a foreign consulate (matricula consular), Social Security Card, Utility bill in your name and address (electricity, water, gas), Local work ID (industry related), Bankcard ID (with photo), Sheriff’s Card, Certified United States birth certificate, Certified foreign birth certificate, Certificate of Citizenship or Naturalization, Consular report of birth abroad, Permanent or temporary Resident Card, Resident Alien Card or1 I-551 Receipt, Employment Authorization Card, United States Military Identification or Military Report of Separation, Local school ID with birth certificate2 (for minors under 18), Other valid ID equivalent to the above

Additionally: Please remember to bring any fingerprinting forms, documents, or written instruction sheets provided by the agency requesting your fingerprints. These often contain necessary agency identifiers (like ORI or RFP numbers) and specify required information or the fingerprinting method (Live Scan or Hard Card). Bringing these specific instructions is crucial.

While not always mandatory for every type of fingerprinting, your Social Security Number (SSN) is often required by the requesting agency (especially for licensing and employment background checks) to accurately identify individuals and process background checks through state and federal systems. It is listed as a required field on standard fingerprint cards like the FD-258. Please refer to the instructions provided by your requesting agency; if they require it on the form, you will need to provide it. AES of Nevada Fingerprinting & Training Center includes it based on standard requirements but handles all personal information securely.

An ORI (Originating Agency Identifier) number is a code assigned by the FBI and state control terminals (like Nevada DPS) to identify the specific agency authorized to request and receive fingerprint background check results. An RFP (Reason For Fingerprinting) code is often used to provide further detail about the specific purpose of the fingerprint request. You typically do not need to find these numbers yourself. They should be provided to you by the agency, employer, or licensing board that is requiring you to get fingerprinted, usually on their official Fingerprint form or instruction sheet. Please bring that form/instruction sheet with you to your appointment.

The actual fingerprint capture process at AES of Nevada Fingerprinting & Training Center is usually quick, typically taking around 10 to 20 minutes. Wait times may vary.

Currently, appointments are not required and walk-ins are welcome at our Las Vegas, Henderson, and Laughlin locations during their respective business hours. (Please note: A formal appointment policy is being developed. While walk-ins are currently accepted, checking our website or calling ahead at 702-253-7821 for the latest information before your visit is always a good idea, especially if you are on a tight schedule.)

For Live Scan fingerprints, AES of Nevada Fingerprinting & Training Center electronically transmits your prints to the designated agency (e.g., Nevada DPS, FBI) for checking against State and Federal criminal history databases. For ink cards, you are typically responsible for mailing the completed card to the requesting agency (AES of Nevada Fingerprinting & Training Center advises using a protective mailer with tracking). AES of Nevada Fingerprinting & Training Center does not receive or process your background check results; the results are sent directly from the analyzing agency (State/FBI) to the entity requesting your background check. Processing times vary significantly by agency and purpose – Live Scan results can take days to weeks, while ink card results can take 8 weeks or more.

The validity period of a fingerprint background check is determined by the agency or entity that requested it, not by the fingerprinting facility. Some agencies consider results valid for 90 days, 6 months, a year, or longer, while others may require new fingerprints for every new application, license renewal, or job change. Please consult the specific agency or employer requiring the background check for their policy on how long they consider the results valid.

  • You are correct that core fingerprint patterns generally don’t change. However, agencies require new fingerprint submissions for several reasons:
    • Identity Verification: To confirm that the person applying now is the same person associated with the record.
    • Updated Record Check: To ensure the background check reflects the most current information in state and federal databases since your last check.
    • Specific Authorization: Each background check is typically authorized only for a specific purpose (e.g., one job or license). A new application usually requires new authorization and a new check.

Regulatory Requirements: Many laws and regulations explicitly mandate new fingerprints at specific intervals (like license renewals) or for new applications.

Yes, AES of Nevada Fingerprinting & Training Center can assist with fingerprinting if you need to obtain your own FBI Identity History Summary (often called a personal review or “rap sheet”). We offer two primary ways:

  • We facilitate specific Live Scan submissions through www.Applicantservices.com for FBI Departmental Orders (https://applicantservices.com/fbi-channeler/Departmental-Order-556-73/).
  • We provide traditional ink fingerprinting on an FD-258 card, which you then submit according to FBI instructions (often via mail or an approved FBI Channeler). This allows you to review your own record. Please contact us at 702-253-7821 to confirm the rolling fee for this ink card service.

Fingerprinting for Nevada Concealed Carry Weapon (CCW) permits issued through the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department (LVMPD) must be obtained directly at the LVMPD fingerprinting bureau. Due to this specific requirement set by LVMPD, AES of Nevada Fingerprinting & Training Center cannot provide fingerprinting services for LVMPD CCW permit applications. Applicants needing fingerprinting for a CCW permit in Las Vegas should contact LVMPD directly for their procedures, locations, and requirements.

Absolutely. Yes, AES of Nevada Fingerprinting & Training Center can help. We offer two primary options:

We provide traditional ink fingerprinting services (Hard Cards) using FD-258 cards, which are commonly required for out-of-state licensing, federal employment background checks, and other non-Nevada specific purposes. You will typically be responsible for mailing the completed card(s) to the appropriate agency (AES of Nevada Fingerprinting & Training Center advises using a protective mailer with tracking). The rolling fee is $25 for the first card, $10 for each additional.

We facilitate specific Live Scan submissions through www.Applicantservices.com for FBI Departmental Orders (https://applicantservices.com/fbi-channeler/Departmental-Order-556-73/) and potentially for the State of Florida (https://applicantservices.com/Florida/) if applicable to your needs.

Rejections, Privacy & Other Services

  • While AES of Nevada Fingerprinting & Training Center utilizes advanced technology and trained technicians, fingerprint submissions can occasionally be rejected by state or federal agencies due to factors like “inconclusive” results or “lack of quality,” sometimes related to individual skin characteristics. AES of Nevada Fingerprinting & Training Center provides a warranty on our fingerprinting services to address such situations, under specific conditions.
    • Warranty Process for Quality Rejections: If you receive an official rejection letter from the receiving agency (e.g., DPS, FBI) citing fingerprint quality issues, you should return to an AES of Nevada Fingerprinting & Training Center office. Please bring both the official rejection letter and your original AES Information Request Form “Warranty” (which you should receive during your initial fingerprinting visit). Upon presentation of both these required documents (typically within 90 days, as indicated by the rejection process), AES of Nevada Fingerprinting & Training Center will provide FD-258 Hard Card ink fingerprinting at no additional cost under the terms of the warranty. If you do not present both the official rejection letter and the AES Warranty document, you will be responsible for the standard costs associated with ink fingerprinting.
    • Voiding the Warranty – Option 1 (Document Destruction): At the time of service, you may be offered the option to sign a ‘Certificate of Destruction’ to have your forms immediately shredded. Choosing this option makes the AES Fingerprinting Warranty null and void. If your fingerprints are rejected after you have chosen immediate document destruction, you will need to repeat the entire fingerprinting process and pay the applicable fees again.
    • Voiding the Warranty – Option 2 (Hard Card Handling): For ink/hard cards, the completed cards are sealed in an envelope by our technician. The AES warranty related to handling becomes null and void if this sealed envelope is bent or tampered with (opened) after leaving our facility. If cards are rejected due to such damage or improper handling after they leave our custody, you will be responsible for all costs associated with re-fingerprinting.
    • Scope: The warranty specifically covers rejections due to fingerprint image quality attributable to the capture process performed at AES of Nevada Fingerprinting & Training Center. It does not apply to rejections based on criminal history, errors in your application information, damage/tampering after leaving AES custody, or other factors unrelated to the initial print quality capture.

No. Protecting your privacy and securing your sensitive information is a top priority. AES of Nevada Fingerprinting & Training Center adheres strictly to state (NVDPS) and federal regulations regarding the handling of fingerprint data. We capture your fingerprints only for the purpose of securely transmitting them to the authorized requesting agency (for Live Scan) or preparing your physical hard card (for ink prints). We do not retain copies or maintain a private database of customer fingerprints after the transaction is successfully completed and transmitted or the hard card provided to you. You may also be offered a ‘Certificate of Destruction’ for related paperwork at the time of service.
